How does an independent agency differ from buying insurance directly?
Written and reviewed by Michael LaBarbera, licensed insurance agent
An independent agency can seek options from multiple insurers, while a direct purchase generally considers the products available through that insurer’s channel. For a design firm, compare the available policy wording and ongoing service—not just the way the application is submitted—before choosing how to arrange coverage.
What are the key facts?
| The purchasing channel does not determine whether a claim is covered. | [1] |
| Independent agencies can seek options from multiple insurers. | [1] |
| Availability depends on the firm’s actual operations and underwriting. | [1] |
| Provident offers Live Certificate access as an ongoing service. | [2] |
What is the practical difference at application time?
An agency can coordinate submissions; a direct channel considers its own available products.
Provident Financial Group quotes multiple carriers from one application and shows which carriers declined and why. The number of responses depends on the firm’s services, projects, location and loss history. A shared initial application does not eliminate supplemental underwriting questions. Describe the work accurately so the review is based on your practice rather than a broad label such as “consultant.”

How can I compare options without ranking carriers?
Compare each actual offer’s services definition, retroactive date, limits, defense treatment and exclusions.
A structural engineering practice and an interiors studio may need different wording even when both buy professional liability. Ask who will explain those differences, identify missing information and coordinate contract questions. Neither an agency relationship nor a direct checkout changes the insuring agreement. Keep a record of the selected terms, unresolved questions and any coverage conditions before authorizing the purchase.

What service questions matter after purchase?
Ask how certificates, changes, renewals and claim-notification questions will be handled.
A design firm may need evidence for several clients, a limit change for a new contract or a review when its services expand. Provident offers same-day certificates and Live Certificates that clients, owners and general contractors can retrieve on demand. Special endorsements still need their own review. Evaluate the service process alongside the coverage rather than assuming a quick initial purchase will resolve every later project requirement.
What should I prepare before choosing a channel?
Gather current insurance, project and discipline mix, prior claims information and contract requirements.
Use consistent facts when requesting alternatives so differences in answers do not distort the comparison. Preserve prior-acts information and disclose known circumstances rather than assuming a replacement policy accepts them. Ask who is responsible for following up on unanswered underwriting questions. The useful result is a clear coverage decision and a workable service relationship, not a claim that one purchasing channel always wins.

Frequently asked questions
Does one application mean every insurer will quote?
No. Each insurer makes its own underwriting decision and may need supplemental information.
Does an agency bind coverage when I ask for a quote?
No. A quote request is not confirmation that coverage has been bound.
Can the agency explain a declined submission?
Provident shows which carriers declined and why, so the firm can understand the responses received.
Should I compare endorsements as well as declarations?
Yes. Endorsements can materially change the coverage described on the declarations.

Carrier names identify markets quoted through our agency. Availability depends on underwriting, state, policy wording and endorsements; this is not an offer of coverage.
